The Self in Conversation
The Conversational Model of psychotherapy, originally a collaboration of Robert Hobson and Russell Meares, has become the most exciting and challenging development in contemporary psychotherapy in Australia.
Each volume of The Self in Conversation is a collection of papers produced for the Annual Conference of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy (ANZAP). The ideas put forward in these books were generated by a group of colleagues working within, and seeking to develop, the Conversational Model of psychotherapy. The fundamental notions of the Conversational Model revolve around the experience of Self evolving in conversation, that trauma disrupts memory and the developing Self, and that disturbances in the sense of personal well-being can be ameliorated and even healed through the psychotherapeutic conversation. The diverse and far ranging collections of papers in these volumes display the breadth and depth of influence of the Conversational Model: from clinical theory and practice to philosophical considerations, from sociological perspectives to conversations evident in the arts. They signify important new and comprehensive understandings of the role of trauma, paths to healing and the connections between memory, language, and a sense of Self in human consciousness.
