The Self in Conversation

The Conversational Model of psychotherapy, originally a collaboration of Robert Hobson and Russell Meares, has become the most exciting and challenging development in contemporary psychotherapy in Australia.

Each volume of The Self in Conversation is a collection of papers produced for the Annual Conference of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychotherapy (ANZAP). The ideas put forward in these books were generated by a group of colleagues working within, and seeking to develop, the Conversational Model of psychotherapy.

The fundamental notions of the Conversational Model revolve around the experience of Self evolving in conversation, that trauma disrupts memory and the developing Self, and that disturbances in the sense of personal well-being can be ameliorated and even healed through the psychotherapeutic conversation.

The diverse and far ranging collections of papers in these volumes display the breadth and depth of influence of the Conversational Model: from clinical theory and practice to philosophical considerations, from sociological perspectives to conversations evident in the arts. They signify important new and comprehensive understandings of the role of trauma, paths to healing and the connections between memory, language, and a sense of Self in human consciousness.

No charge - No undressing

Peter Tyler

Of all the mass killers in history, tuberculosis must surely rate as one of the most insidious. How bad it was can best be gauged by the fact that about a billion people died from the disease over the last two hundred years — a figure equal to the total population of the world for much of that time.

Here in No charge – No undressing is the story of how it was treated in the 20th century in Australia and, more particularly, in NSW by an organization established by concerned citizens. CHATA (Community Health and Tuberculosis Australia) as it is now known, was originally started as a crusade against a disease that was then called ‘consumption’. It was a charity that worked in an area usually serviced by the State but which was left to this remarkable association.

Gradually the State did become involved, but even then decided to use the experienced and already established CHATA to carry out a determined campaign in NSW to eradicate the disease of tuberculosis.

No charge – No undressing by consultant historian Peter Tyler is an engrossing and detailed account of this association and its crusade that spans 90 years. It goes from those early meetings at Sydney Town Hall to CHATA’s current support of various research programs devoted to improving community health for all. Along the way we meet viceroys, politicians, prelates, doctors and socialites, all of whom played their part.

This detailed and well-researched book is a much-needed addition to the history of community health in Australia.

Qantas by George! The remarkable story of George Roberts

Paul Byrnes

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of the formation of Qantas, an engineer who was there at the start tells his story which is recorded by author, Paul Brynes. The result is a fascinating insight into early Australian aviation through the long and interesting life of 92-year-old George Roberts.

This book will inspire, entertain and enlighten with true stories that are often stranger and more bizarre than fiction. Always intrigued by how things work, George’s natural enthusiasm was fired by involvement with his father’s automobile business in Ipswich, Queensland. In his early twenties the talented engineer and flying enthusiast joined the fledgling airline, Qantas. Over the next 38 years he rose to great heights and much of the safety, efficiency and innovation which is inherent in the culture of this vast organization can be directly linked to the special brand of Roberts’ ingenuity and engineering skill.

Now in retirement, George is a mainstay of the company’s archives and still works at this interest several days a week.
